The Obama campaign took the bait on Sarah Palin's attack on Obama's relationship with unrepentant Pentagon bomber William Ayers over the weekend. Responding to Palin's comments that Obama pals around with terrorists, the Obama campaign raised the issue of the Keating Five scandal on John McCain. Rabid liberal attack dog, Paul Begala went so far as to taunt McCain, that McCain didn't want to "go there" with Ayers, because the Obama camp would hit him with the Keating Five scandal. Begala is such a slug, he didn't know that Obama has close ties to John Glenn, another of the Keating Five.
If McCain were smart he would come back with "I'll see your Keating Five and raise you $105,000 in Fannie Mae money". That's because McCain was exxonerated in the Savings and Loan scandal from the 1980's known as the Keating Five scandal. But, Obama has yet to answer for alot about Fannine Mae and Freddie Mac.
Start with his close ties to former Fannie Mae chairmen Jim Johnson and Franklin Raines. Raines took advantage of lacks oversight at Fannie Mae and walked away with $90 million in six years. Raines was at the helm when accounting fraud was discovered. The FBI has opened an investigation into the former mortgage giant at the heart of the current financial melt down. In addition, both Raines and Johnson got sweetheart mortgage loans from Countrywide lending. Countrywide had a close business relationship with Fannie Mae and it's losses in the mortgage markets was the beginning of the financial meltdown.
As well, Obama also has yet to answer for his $105,000 in campaign cash from Fannie Mae in only three years. It took Obama only three years to hit number two on the donations list from a company that has been described as a campaign slush fund for Democrats.
Realistically, the current crisis, spawned by Fannie Mae will make the S&L debacle of the 1980's look like a puddle compared to an ocean. Obama has been close pals and the beneficiary of huge amounts of cash from the people who are most responsible for that ocean.
McCain needs to bring it now, or go home in November. We'll see if he can give this traction even with the Old School media running interference for Obama.
